What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the United States primarily for people aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger people with disabilities. It helps cover medical costs like hospital stays, doctor visits, and prescription drugs.

Parts of Medicare

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health care.
  • Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage): Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare, combining Parts A and B with additional benefits like vision and dental.
  • Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs through private plans.

Eligibility

To qualify for Medicare, you generally need to be:

  • 65 years or older.
  • A U.S. citizen or permanent resident for at least 5 years.
  • Receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits.

Some people under 65 with disabilities or certain conditions may also qualify.
